This paper provides opportunities for students to develop the skills, attributes, and knowledge related to the University of Waikato, School of Education, Graduate Diploma of Teaching graduate profile and the academic rationale and goals for its teacher education programmes, particularly those that relate to the purposes, principles, practices and issues related to arts education. Students completing this paper also develop their professional knowledge, practice, values and relationships as outlined in the Graduating Teacher Standards: Aotearoa New Zealand. Specific standards identified in this paper are one, four and five.

The aim of this paper is to introduce students to the learning and teaching of the Arts disciplines (Dance, Drama, Music-Sound Arts and Visual Art) in the primary school curriculum.

The Introductory Lecture for this paper is on Monday 24 June, from 2.30 to 4.00 in Room TL.2.26.

Students who successfully complete the course should be able to:

  • Recognise the arts as distinct disciplines within The New Zealand Curriculum 2007 and explore a range of resources to support the teaching of them.

  • Explore and actively engage in all four disciplines, through practical learning experiences.

  • Reflect on the creative process and compare with current literature.

  • Identify the elements, techniques and conventions of Dance, Drama, Music and Visual Art and use selected terminology from each discipline with accuracy and confidence.

  • Establish a basis from which planning, teaching and evaluating lessons in the arts can be implemented.

  1. Pre-campus observation tasks in each discipline - two separate online postings in all four disciplines by the due dates. (All posts must be completed by Sunday 18 August.)
  2. On campus participation - completed on campus plus separate online postings in all four disciplines by Monday 2 September.
  3. Teaching placement in schools - online reflection:
  • Dance - 1 online post by 16 September
  • Drama - 1 online post by 16 September
  • Music-Sound Arts - 1 online post by 30 September
  • Visual Art - 1 online post by 30 September

PLease note

Full attendance at workshops is compulsory; as class interactions cannot be made up. This paper is internally assessed. In order to meet the requirement of this paper all assignments must be submitted on or before the due date. Unless accompanied by an official extension, assignments submitted after the due date will be accepted, but not formally marked. If the teaching assignment is not completed and submitted then the overall paper requirements are not completed and the student will receive an IC (incomplete) final grade. An IC is treated as a failing grade.
